Small and medium sized violas

Medium sized Violas

One of the central challenges in viola making is getting the richest possible tone from the smallest possible instrument. A key factor appears to be the width of the centre bouts: a broader middle section can, to a certain extent, compensate for a shorter body length.

Based on this principle, we have developed two medium-sized viola models of our own, as historical examples in this size are exceedingly rare.

Montagana inspired

An ideal model can be found in Domenico Montagnana's "Sleeping Beauty" cello. Its proportions offer exactly what a compact viola with a powerful voice requires. Inspired by this remarkable instrument, we have translated the Sleeping Beauty as a viola.

With a body length of 40.2 cm (15⅞″) and the full, generously arched Maggini-style arching, our "Cello Viola" produces a tone that surpasses many larger violas in projection—rich, dark, warm and full-bodied.

Andrea Guarneri scaled down

We have reduced the length of our popular Andrea Guarneri model (presented in detail here) by 3%, while preserving the original width. The result is a remarkably comfortable viola with a full, rich tone.

  Corpusgröße schwingende Saitenlänge  alternative Saitenlänge
 D.Montagana inspired  40,2 cm (16″) 36 cm (14⅛″) 36,5 cm (14⅜″)
Andrea Guarneri scaled down 40,5 cm (16″) 36,5 cm (14⅜″) 36 cm (14⅛″)

Ada Meinich playing her viola by Barbara Gschaider: body and arching based on Andrea Guarneri's model, reduced in length by 3% (40.5 cm / 16″ body length), with a string length of 36 cm (14⅛″).

Small Violas (under 16")

We also offer our violas with body lengths of 39.5 cm (15½″) or 38.5 cm (15⅛″) on request.

For the 39.5 cm (15½″) model, we have an excellent historical example: a viola by Gasparo da Salò dating from around 1580.

For even smaller instruments, we once again rely on one of our own designs. Inspired by Montagnana, this model delivers an impressive tonal performance even with a body length of just 38.5 cm (15⅛″).

Corpusgröße String length alternative string length
 Gasparo da Salo  39,5 cm (15½″) 35,5 cm (14″) 36 cm (14⅛″)
